My Story

My name is Patrick and I am a landscape designer located in San Diego, California. I've always had a passion for plants, which led me to study landscape architecture and horticulture at Clemson University. I have been working as a landscape designer since, in both New Jersey and California. I have also worked remotely for clients and contractors all over the place, doing projects in places like Texas, Wisconsin, Florida, Iowa, and even British Columbia! Over the years I have developed a deep knowledge of the plant palette and design culture of a variety of climate zones and geographic locations, allowing me to offering well thought out, realistic, and experience backed ideas. I have done a variety of designs that included components such as pools, pathways, decks, patios, driveways, pergolas, lighting, gardens, outdoor kitchens, driveways, outdoor furniture selection, and more! I cater to a range of budgets and design preferences including modern, tropical, Mediterranean, desert, cottage, traditional, contemporary, and more!

My Services

The full packages I have developed include a 2-D landscape plan, installation guide (planting, lighting, hardscape, etc), 3-D renderings and a video walkthrough, as well as a design ID book. These deliverables help you clearly visualize the design intent, can be used to get installation bids from contractors, provide a guide for the construction, can be submitted to HOA's for approval, etc.

A home flipper came to me with a new property they had just purchased. They wanted to renovate the home to bring it to it's former glory by restoring it with traditional crafstman colors and detail. To help sell the home, they wanted to maximize the function of the property and make it attractive to home buyers, who prioritize value in the aggressively expensive Los Angeles housing market. By providing a pool, entertainment features, seating areas, and ecclectic gardens, the main residents, we have essentially more than doubled the footprint of living space when combined with the home itself. Unique accents like organic rock boulders, corten steel edging and fixtures color color contrast and patina, as well as varied planting selections help highlight the craftsman theme of the home and property. To add a stream of income, an ADU (accessory dwelling unit) was proposed. Average rent prices in LA are high; a high rent rate is now more than justified and attractive to renters which can help the homeowner pay their mortgage and other steward fees. Everyone wins. 🙌

The first one is more traditional, with roses, pastels, and grasses. The second design is a bit more tropical, with trunking cordyline, pink accents, and glossier leaved varieties.

This property is quite thin, has a decent slope, and the home is very close to the road. Rather than a traditional driveway where you pull in straight, and the cars are exposed, the client wanted to hide the cars from street view. To have two parking spots that don’t interfere with each other’s access I designed the footprint of the driveway down to the inch. I proposed retaining a portion of the area for a parking pad and screened the front of the property with thick, dense foliage so the cars will not be front and center.

What do you think of this design? Would you have preferred a more traditional driveway/parking that could be seen from the street, allowing for a lawn, or do you prefer the idea of sacrificing lawn space to hide the cars for a cleaner curb aesthetic?

Say it with me… entertainment and relaxation spaces can be in the front yard! After all, the “front porch” is a staple in American history, serving as a gathering point for the entire family, improving social cohesion amongst the neighborhood. It provides a transition from the indoor space of the home to the outdoors, the private to the public, a place for both personal reflection and community observation.

I proposed retaining the whole area along the house with corten steel edging to the level of the existing entrance platform to provide the flattened, useable space. It also avoids the need to step up or down when coming out from the indoors. A series of 2 x 2 stepping stones, a corten steel fire pit area, a boulder water feature, and plant materials all come together to make this a beautiful, relaxing, and functional space. I then proposed a successive garden around the raised platform separating it from the lawn. The trees, shrubs, and grasses provide a sense completeness as well as a sense of boundary, without completely blocking the space off from the public street.

The client wanted a more natural setting that function as a porch, while providing immersion in nature and modern curb appeal. This design successfully marries the concept of the American porch with modern aesthetics and needs.

Loving this modernizing landscape design I did for a home in Scottsdale.

Currently the home is a cream color with a terra cotta color roof, with a sparse landscape. To update the color palette I selected a gray roof tile, as well as a cool toned monochromatic palette for the home body and details. To match the home palette, a combination of limestone finished concrete with gray paver edging was proposed for the driveway and newly proposed pathways.

I lowered the current courtyard wall to help open up the space and balance out the ratios of the home while still providing a sense of privacy and space. A large fountain in the center of the courtyard provides a focal point to the space and marks the entrance to the home. A seating area was tactfully placed in the area that will receive the most shade throughout the year, providing a place to enjoy the sites and sounds of the space while staying cool.

Straying from the typical desert palette of Scottsdale, drought and heat tolerant, yet lush and green trees such as cork oak, mastic trees, crape myrtles, and olive trees were proposed to provide shade, scale, and color interest. A complimenting planting design of native grasses, some agave, and a few flowering species provide a minimal and clean aesthetic with some pops of geometric and color interest.

A groundcover of a mixed river rock selection provides a balance of cool tones and warm tones that will tie in the home palette (cool) with the surrounding natural scape of the area (warm), while also contrasting beautifully with the substantial front lawn that is proposed.

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to visit the Spheres in Seattle, one of the Amazon office buildings. The concept for the building is to provide an innovative and creative working environment by bringing nature into the work place. There’s various spaces to work, hold meetings, have lunch, and take a walk all while enjoying the setting of a hyper naturalistic rainforest setting.

This client currently has a small pool in her backyard that she does not use and wants to fill it in. She gave me her ideas and asked me to take the concepts and run with them. Her main requests: mostly pink and white flowers, a water feature, shade trees, and access to the pavilion behind the space.

I proposed a stepping stone pathway directly in front of the most commonly used doors to provide a straight shot to the seating area beyond. I then positioned pink crape myrtles within an intersecting, playful, pea gravel pathway running from the west side to a water feature and bench at the east side. These pathways shaped the corten steel line beds which I designed a whimsical arrangement of perennials, annuals, herbs, grasses, and shrubs. I chose plants with different bloom seasons, contrasting leaf colors, and varied textures to provide an interesting and diverse arrangement. There are also planters at the corners to define the space and provide some scale along with the trees.

When I was visiting NJ last month I picked plants out for these rail planters with my mom. We picked some plants we had never seen before, we wanted to experiment. When I came back last weekend I saw they were struggling after a month of growing. Some of the plants were doing well, so I left those. I went to the nursery to get some hardy plants to replace the others. They now have some robust, colorful, and well suited planting arrangements that will grow in quickly for them to enjoy for the summer!

I put this raised patio pond together for myself and I wanted to share it with everyone!

Patio ponds are a great way to add another dimension to your space. To deter predators I decided on using a raised planter I bought off of a retired contractor who makes them for fun. I then lined the planter with pond liner and stapled/nailed it in. I filled a planter large enough to be above the water line with regular organic planting soil for some terrestrial plants. I also filled some smaller plants that will stay below the waterline with pond soil for some aquatic plants. I planted them both and arranged them in the pond. I then laid out an aquatic fish tank substrate then capped it off with sand for some weight. I began to fill the water with a hose which reminded that I needed to drill drainage holes in the back to act as a spillway when it rains hard and the pond overfills. I then placed some smaller aquatic plants in the substrate planter to complement the plants in the pots. After a few days I added some nerite snails to eat excess algae and some dwarf platies to eat the mosquito larvae starting to develop, as well as provide some interest/fun to the set up! For the finishing touch I added a solar powered fountain to oxygenate the water and so I Dan hear it while I’m relaxing on my patio.

classic, southern, brick home with a little curb appeal.

I kept the large Crape Myrtle at the left side of the home, as well as an existing shrub on the right corner of the home. I then proposed all of all of the dated, overgrown shrubbery that is currently blocking the windows. I replaced them with an evergreen foundation planting of soft touch japanese hollies, with upright steeds hollies in some key areas. A few little line hydrangeas will add scale, as well some seasonal interest in the summer and fall with bountiful large lime green/white blooms. A mixture of ferns (out spring through fall), helleborus (bloom in late winter/early spring), and candytuft (bloom intermittently spring-fall) will fill in the spaces between and coincide to give seasonal interest for most of the year. Lastly, I proposed some mounding heller’s japanese holly in the foreground to match the foundation plantings, as well as provide more evergreens for the winter months. ✨

Over the years, I’ve had to cater to some interesting pets and wildlife while designing landscapes. I’ve designed a tortoise exhibit, I’ve included bat houses in a local design, I’ve designed a cat friendly “play yard”, etc. This design is for the bees! The client is a beekeeper and wanted to make her yard more ideal for her honey bees so they can thrive and produce more honey. The client has a large hillside currently covered in periwinkle vine, which blooms for only a small period of time, making it not the most ideal plant to cater to bees. They came to me with an idea they saw in an Instagram reel where someone had converted a sloped grass lawn space into rows of lavender and grass. I applied this concept to the client’s hillside but instead of using grass between lavender, I proposed thyme. Both lavender and thyme bloom aggressively throughout most of the year in our climate and are favored by bees. They’re also both very drought tolerant and sun loving, perfect for our SoCal climate. Not to mention they both smell amazing to humans AND bees. A clean dressing of small white pebbles will provide contrast with the plants making them pop.

While I typically go for a more natural landscape style, I’m loving these clean rows that go with the natural topography of the hillside. What do you think?

Also, I wonder how the taste of honey will change once the bees are harvesting most of their pollen from thyme and lavender plants. I guess time will tell!

This massive, property needed a revamp. Currently, a huge horseshoe driveway dominates the entire front yard. To provide more lawn space I proposed a new pea gravel driveway with Belgian block edging that omits the imposing horseshoe portion. To make up for parking space lost from removing that portions I proposed a parking pad further up the driveway, close to the front door to provide a consolidated parking space for the homeowners. A network of flagstone pathways provide circulation from the parking pad as well as for those walking in the from the street. Starting at the garage, a basic network of pea gravel pathways were proposed to provide circulation. At the southern portion of the yard, I proposed a new patio to provide usable seating and entertainment space. A water fountain was included to help drown out the noise of the nearby freeway. Lastly, a traditional, formal planting design with boxwood edging, greenery, accents of white flowers, and patterned arrangements was incorporated to pay homage to the colonial architecture of the home. Overall the design has a highly functional for the clients’ needs while not compromising the classic Southern aesthetic ✨🌱

Cute little design I did for a new build in Austin, TX. 🤠

I kept it simple with a dg outdoor eating space against the home, a dg fire pit area in the back of the lot, and a wood trellis block on the side of the porch to provide a sense of space and privacy. Stepping stones in DG off the back porch connect the dining area, as well as the lawn, and provide a place for a grill. Most importantly they will provide a landing point for the dogs to jump off of the porch when they have zoomies. By offering a solid landing point, areas of wear that would develop if that portion was lawn will be avoided. A combination of larger shrubs and trees layered with smaller plants line the entire fence line, providing privacy, seasonal interest, and shade. The selection of oaks, palms, and desert plants is unique to the climactic zone and honor a classic Texas identity. Angled bedlines edged in corten steel provide a contemporary touch and the gravel selection provides contrast to the decomposed granite and lawn areas.

An organic desert landscape design for an @airbnb in Joshua Tree 🌵

I jumped at the chance to do this unique design for a new build out in the high desert of California. I took an organic design approach and used various type of rock to mesh the contemporary style home with the surrounding landscape. Simple features like a fire pit, hot tub, and desert plants will provide visitors with a classic Joshua Tree experience, while keeping installation costs at a minimum and minimizing future maintenance needs for the home owners. 🌵

These photos were sent from a remote client of mine in the Bay Area after he had a local contractor in his area install the design I did for him.

The property has a small front yard that needed curb appeal. Mostly everything was demolished, the only thing that has remained is a tree growing next to the home. As per HOA code, the front path is concrete to match the public sidewalk. An accessory flagstone path provides an easy route to the hose spigot. 1”-2” Black mexican pebble ground cover (it’s actually more of a cool gray than black) was installed to unify the space and reduce maintenance needs. Drought tolerant plantings spaced generously will provide unique contrast of forms and colors to contrast each other and the pebbles.

The backyard needed a complete renovation to bring the patio space to the grade of the doors to the home, avoiding the need to step down. The 3-piece premiere smooth block with a charcoal border from @basaliteconcreteproducts was used for the patio and steps. To cover the lower portion of the neighbor’s wall, a small planting bed with mexican pebble was provided. Selective furniture choices provide multiple seating areas.

Throughout the property, light fixtures and ledge lights from @siteonesupply provide visibility and a vibe at night.

For this design, the goal was to make the backyard conducive to entertaining large groups of people for pool days and parties.
The front yard was kept simple with low maintenance plantings, a newly proposed driveway layout, floating stairs from the street to the front door, and a pathway leading to the backyard. Currently, the right side yard is a steep hill with no defined pathing. A series of stairs and retaining walls is proposed to make a more usable and inviting entrance. I proposed a massive, raised pool deck to bring the whole backyard to the same grade as the sliding glass doors at the back of the home and the existing pools. By doing so, space was provided for a large entertainment pavilion adjacent to the right of pool with a kitchen/bar, a large dining table, and a seating/tv. In the center of the space, stepping stones with artificial turf between them, as well as some raised seat wall planters provide some greenery in the hardscape dominated layout. To the left of the pool, a fire table seating area provided more shaded entertainment space. The pool will be remodeled to include a baja shelf and bring the floor to a walkable depth of 3’. An updated finish, tile accents, and fresh coping will make it look good as new. Lastly, a wall with fire and water features will add a unique touch that evokes a resort feel.

I was challenged to break out of my comfort zone with this luxury-contemporary design aesthetic, but I think it ended up coming together very well! I’m glad to have this addition to my portfolio to show my versatility and range as a designer.

When a home has a smaller outdoor area it’s important to maximize its usable space. Currently there is a dated wood deck, a brick retaining wall, and some overgrown shrubs. An update from the painted wood deck to a gray paver patio with a dark border will provide a timeless and clean aesthetic. Putting the patio at grade with the back sliding door will provide seamless circulation to and from the inside of the home. To maximize the patio space, I proposed a new contemporary style retaining wall that runs along the back fence line, rather than coming out a few feet like the current one does. This will provide that much more room for seating, a firepit, and a grill to make the space feel bigger. I proposed black bamboo in playful teal planters along the newly proposed retaining wall. Black bamboo will grow tall to provide privacy from the neighboring building without bushing out too wide and taking up space. It’s also super easy to care for and needs minimal maintenance. The teal color selection of the planters will match the existing window trim.
